Parents in Ireland should worry about ” Protecting Your Child From the Sun this Summer in Ireland”.

Summer is here and we wonder will we have a heatwave- will we have some sunny days to enjoy with the family- will we plan a trip to the beach or a day out.

Sometimes we are in a rush with “our day out preparations” , what to pack, what to bring. Life just gets in the way.

“Hindsight is a great thing” we all say at times but being serious when it comes to the summer sun and children we have a duty to them to be prepared.

Protecting Your Child From the Sun this Summer in Ireland

A Fact You May Not Be Aware Of?

According to the HSE Ireland – Getting sunburnt as a child increases the risk of skin cancer in later life.

That was something I was unaware of always presuming the danger was an immediate one (which of course it is too).

All the more reason to worry and plan for sun protection.

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD FROM THE SUN THIS SUMMER IN IRELAND – The Moral of the Story Is To Be Prepared

We all know that Babies and children have very sensitive skin and therefore we owe it to them to protect them from the harmful effects of summer sun in Ireland.

Some things to plan and prepare for:

  • Staying in the shade
  • Sunglasses for children too
  • Sun protective clothing
  • Sunscreen Putting on sunscreen and  Reapplying sunscreen
  • Wide-brimmed sun hats (not caps) to protect head and neck

Sunscreen and babies under 12 months

Interestingly I noticed online that HSE Ireland state “For babies under 6 months, use clothes to cover up their skin as much as possible. Apply small amounts of sunscreen to their exposed skin.”

Whereas in the UK the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends ” delaying the use of sunscreen until your baby is at least six months old”.
